Most of us probably wonder why flowers are given to loved ones during Valentine’s Day. Or why do we give flowers to our mothers on Mother’s Day? Why do we send flowers to sick people? Or why are flowers the first thing that enters our minds when we want to send something to someone on a special occasion? Well, that is probably because each flower really does have a symbolic meaning. There are countless of flowers in the entire world. As much as we want to mention all of them, let us just mention some of those included in the long list of flower names as well as their corresponding meanings.

AZALEA

First in the long list of flower names is Azalea. The genus of this flower is Rhododendron. It grows in the United States and Japan, which explains the reason why there are Azalea festivals in these two countries. In China, Azalea symbolizes womanhood. In other countries, it symbolizes caring, fragility, and passion.

GLADIOLUS

Second in the long list of flower names is Gladiolus. This flower forms part of the Ixieae tribe, the Ixioideae subfamily, the Iridaceae family, and the Asparagales order. The places where Gladiolus is seen include South Africa, Tropical Africa, Asia, and Mediterranean Europe. Also known as Gladiolas, the meaning of this flower includes generosity, love at first sight, and strength of character.

FORGET-ME-NOT

Forget-Me-Not does not sound like a flower name but it is indeed included in the long list of flower names. Its scientific name is Myosotis, it forms part of the Boraginoideae subfamily, and is included in the Boraginaceae family. This genus is composed of roughly fifty species and the name Forget-Me-Not originated from folklore. What this flower symbolizes is already obvious, but aside from that, it also symbolizes true love.

EDELWEISS

This fourth flower is of course also included in the long list of flower names. The scientific name for Edelweiss is Leontopodium alpinum and it is included in the Gnaphalieae tribe, the Asteraceae family, and the Asterales order. This grows in various countries including Malaysia, Italy, Norway, France, Switzerland, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Mongolia. The silver foliage and inflorescence of Edelweiss are what makes this flower interesting for gardeners. Moreover, gardeners love it because it symbolizes daring, courage, and noble purity.

DAFFODIL

Also included in the long list of flower names is Daffodil or Narcissus, which is its scientific name. It forms part of the Narcisseae tribe, the Amaryllidaceae family, and the Asparagales order. This flower may be seen growing in Asia, North Africa, and Europe. Daffodil symbolizes regard, unrequited love, sunshine, and respect.

These are only some of the countless flowers we have from various parts of the world. Knowing the meaning of the flowers will make it easier for us to choose which ones to buy for our loved ones.
